When we got our first two Yorkie puppies, Oliver and Abby, we were told to feed them Vet prescribed food (kibble) and we followed the Vet’s advice on all health care choices. Most Vets are not taught animal nutrition and species appropriate diet for cats and dogs. They were taught that kibble is the best for your pets. One time, I went into the Vet’s office and asked for help in cooking home food for the babies. I was told that the kibble was created by "nutritionists" and is a perfectly balanced meal. When Abby got cancer at age 9, I created an Instagram site to connect with other Yorkie parents and to help heal my pain by seeing joy from other babies. My Instagram family means the world to me. It wasn’t long before I realized that Abby was not the only one in my family that had health problems because of prescribed pet kibble. Oliver had knee surgery, bladder stone surgery and developed two fat
pockets on each side. Also, recurring ear infections all while on prescription diet for bladder stones. Sammy was always overweight, none of the prescription diets worked. He used to have severe reverse sneezing and vomiting. Allie was born with liver shunt disease and put on LD prescription diet and it was always a struggle for her to eat even after adding chicken or other fresh ingredients and always would hand feed her. She is now thriving on real fresh food. Max was also on kibble when we adopted him. He would eat only when he was starving. I'm sure all of you have heard the Vet's advice, "they will eat when they are hungry". That was not the life I wanted for my babies.
After Abby got sick, I began my journey of research and dove into all the information I could find. I watched pet food documentaries and read research about “species appropriate food”. One thing I found out after watching “Pet Fooled”, is that Dogs and Wolfs DNA are 99.9% the same. They need to eat meat bones and organs, not brown rice, corn and chicken by products.
As a side note, dental health is very important, and x-rays are the only way to tell if the teeth are healthy. Kibble is the reason why so many dogs have bad teeth. Bad and rotting teeth can cause organ failure when the bacteria travels through the blood stream. Sammy had 8 teeth removed two years ago and none last year. I really do believe my HappyDogBistro dental chews help with dental care.
My love for animals, have driven me to spread the word to my furry friend’s parents about fresh real food and healthy treats. Now I am feeding commercial raw and homemade raw and cooked food. See my story highlights on Instagram at @happyyorkiefamily.
All of our babies are healthy and thriving. It gives me great relief and peace to know I’m doing everything I can to provide my babies a healthy, happy, long life.
